An introduction into the Eustory summer academy

44 student and 15 teachers of 15 different European countries have been travelling to Berlin for a week to take part in the 7th EUstory summer academy. Each of the students had entered a history competition and the winners got chance to join this summer academy at the Wannseeforum Berlin.

The topic of this year's academy is "East and West - Europe after communism and reunification". The EUstory's co-ordination office at the Korber-Foundation in Hamburg. The EUstory network currently comprises 16 members of the organisation throughout Europe. Each of them conducts national research competitions for pupils and organises seminars for both the pupils and the teachers.

During the summer academy the students are divided into six different groups to learn about new subjects that they may not know anything about. The groups meet daily in an allocated classroom where they converse and spend time together in order to learn and produce something new at the end of the week, like a newspaper or a dance. This is then finalised and shared with the whole academy on the last day.

                             General history about the Wannseeforum

The Wanseeforum is located directly at a lake, the beauty of this place had already convinced a Berlin banker to build this summer residence 100 years ago. The house is very large and has many well equipt rooms. It would be very easy to get lost in a place such as this, with huge mahogany doors and endless corridors coming from every direction. The tall antique ceilings make the place feel spacious and important. With the superb view of the lake and the boats which pass regularly but slowly, you are able to relax with peace and tranquility on your side.

The Forum was founded in 1951 and as a consequence of the American re-education, it wanted to help young people to find new goals and to develop their creative talents. Though times change, the connection of political education, art and music, continues to be the main motive of work here. At present 15 different countries from around Europe are studying 6 different subjects in small groups. These subjects include newspaper, multi-media, theatre/dance, photo, radio and also video. These activities allow the students to express their creative sides, whilst conversing, learning and meeting new and interesting people. All groups show liveliness, enthusiasm and are all bursing with new and exciting ideas.

The free organisation of the Wansee Forum is still preserved to this very day, this means that they are independent from political parties, religion and interest groups.

The country is the main building which has a breath taking view. It has a big reception room with an open fire. Student meet in the room daily at 8:45am, where they sit on the wooden floor amongst colourful blankets. At this time of morning you can see tired looking people who have just woken up! The room bustles with noise and tired conversation. The ATRIUM building (also known as the second house) was built during the 80's and is used for even more groups who wish to work here. At the moment our teachers live there and are isolated from us © . They have spacious rooms and picturesque views, the house is also in a quiet location. The third house is known as the theatre room (in the past it was a stable for the horses) it has its own stage.

The Theatre/Dance group rehearse their presentation there almost everyday. You can hear the relaxing music and see the eager students dancing tentitively with their teamer.

The kitchen serves, breakfast, dinner and supper as a buffet style. During these scheduled eating times, students rush to get their delicious foods as everyone is hungry from the long and tiresome working days. The food always looks very colourful and appetising and has a wide variety of food choices for guests. They serve tea, coffee and cake during the afternoon. Each group regularly takes a coffee break as each activity continues to be very thirsty work!!

Friendly facts about the Wansee forum house and the Joerger family

Carl Joerger and his wife Elizabeth were very friendly people and lived in the country house at the beginning of the 20th century. They had four children together and were a very wealthy and happy family. Mr Joerger owned a bank and was therefore a very rich man! The family only lived in their country house during the summer time, when the winter approached they would live near Potsdamer Platz. The family did no other travelling as the idea of tourism is very modern.

Description of the house in the beginning of the  century

The basement was where Mr Joerger invited his representatives, the

garden room as it is known today, was the library, this was where the men

went to smoke. Smoking was not a very good habit for women in these

days and on some occasions the women could be put into prison for doing

this! There was also a place for eating, this is where everyone would sit

together and have a good time. The food was heated by coal in the oven.

The Joergers also had a huge wine cellar where all their alcohol was

stored.

Today it is the Discotec room, but when the family lived here it was used

for the servants to wash the laundry and iron it. The family had a lot of

servants as they could afford to employ them.

The first floor was used for the children and Mr and Mrs Joerger's

bedrooms. Their children had very large rooms as the family was very

generous!   On the first floor they also had a guest room, two bathrooms

and a separate toilet. One of the rooms was used for the children's

babysitters. An extra room was located for a walk in wardrobe for Mr and

Mrs Joergers clothes!

The second floor contained private rooms which were only used for the

family. No other people were allowed there.

Upstairs (also known as the attic) had two small rooms and a toilet, it was

used for some servants that worked for the family.

Lastly, the stables were on the first floor (the dance room as it is known

today) this was where the coach man and his wife lived. Downstairs lived

the butler and his wife.

The NEWSPAPER group has the topic Migration, too. We visited the kinder garden with the multimedia group. Producing a newspaper means a lot of work. Some people took some interviews, some write articles about migration and our academy and some take photos. The newspaper has to be produced within five days for the final presentation. Our teamer is Lan Böhm from Germany.
